Three men went on trial in an English court for their role in the theft of an 18-carat golden toilet, a functioning artwork titled “America” by artist Maurizio Cattelan, from Blenheim Palace. The heist took place in September 2019 when a group of men broke into the palace grounds, smashed a door, and ripped the toilet from the wall. The toilet, insured for $6 million, weighed 98 kilos and prosecutors believe it was likely divided into smaller amounts of gold to be sold. Michael Jones is charged with burglary, while Fred Doe and Bora Guccuk are charged with conspiracy to convert criminal property. A fourth man, James Sheen, has already pleaded guilty to burglary. The trial is expected to last four weeks at Oxford Crown Court. The stolen golden toilet had been on display as part of an exhibit at Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and major tourist attraction.
