Organizers of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon announce change in start location due to warm temperatures

The 40th annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in northeastern Minnesota has been postponed due to melting snow, prompting organizers to move the starting location just north of Two Harbors on March 2. The warm temperatures have made the original start line unsuitable for the race, with virtually no snow present. Mike Keyport, president of the marathon, expressed disappointment at the change but gratitude for the support of Two Harbors and dedicated volunteers. Spectators and teams can access the new starting location via Highway 2 to the North Shore State Trail. Last year’s race was canceled due to a lack of snow, and this year’s race has been delayed due to a loss of snowpack. The marathon serves as a qualifier for the Iditarod and has been a staple along the North Shore since 1980. Volunteers and donations are crucial for the success of the race, with Keyport encouraging community involvement.
