Jason Kilburn, a Nebraska man, is struggling to obtain a Social Security number and valid birth certificate for his toddler, Caroline, who is currently listed as “Unakite Thirteen Hotel” in state records. Caroline, who was born in November 2022 in a house in Iowa, was given to a foster family by her mother shortly after birth. After proving he was Caroline’s father through a DNA test, Kilburn gained custody of her. However, without proper documentation, Kilburn has been unable to access health insurance, child care, or other services for Caroline that require a Social Security number for verification. The certificate of live birth Caroline received listed her name as “Unakite Thirteen Hotel,” a computer-generated name. Kilburn is currently working with an attorney to resolve the issue with the state of Nebraska. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services filed a motion to establish a legal name for Caroline so they could obtain an official birth certificate for her. However, this has not led to the issuance of a Social Security number for Caroline. Kilburn is facing financial challenges as he is currently unable to work due to a heart problem and has been denied Medicaid for Caroline due to lack of a Social Security number. He is also unable to enroll Caroline in early intervention services. Despite these challenges, Kilburn says Caroline is a joy to be around and shows no signs of trauma from the ongoing situation.
