369 Palestinian prisoners are set to be released today as part of a deal that also includes the release of three hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The majority of the prisoners, 333 in total, were detained from Gaza after Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023. The remaining prisoners are from the West Bank, Jerusalem, and its suburbs. This release marks the sixth exchange under the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Hamas has confirmed that they will release the three hostages, identified as Sagui Dekel-Chen, Sasha Alexander Troufanov, and Iair Horn. Dekel-Chen, an American Israeli, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz where he lived with his family and worked on refurbishing old buses into mobile tech classrooms for underserved children. Hamas spokesperson Abu Obaida stated that the release of the hostages is in accordance with the terms of the ceasefire agreement reached on January 19.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office has acknowledged that they have received the list of names from Hamas. The release of both prisoners and hostages is seen as a positive step towards maintaining peace between Israel and Hamas.
