Major interstate closed after pileup in Wyoming highway tunnel leaves two dead

Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash inside a tunnel on Interstate 80 in Green River, Wyoming. The crash resulted in injuries to others, but details were not yet available. The tunnel was evacuated, and authorities shut down traffic in both directions. Smoke was seen billowing from an exit tunnel after the crash, which was described as a multivehicle pileup with an active fire and explosion threat. Gov. Mark Gordon called the crash a tragedy and said there was no estimate for when the roadway would reopen. The region was under a hazardous weather outlook for snow, which may have contributed to the slick conditions on the roadway. Green River is a city in the southwest corner of Wyoming with a population of over 11,000. Representatives from a local hospital and the medical examiner did not immediately provide information on the number of injured individuals. The Wyoming Highway Patrol responded to the crash, and the transportation department reported slick and slush-lined conditions on Interstate 80 in parts of the state. The cause of the crash and the extent of the damage were not specified in the initial reports.
