A federal judge has granted a temporary restraining order blocking a Trump Administration executive order that would have cut federal funding to medical institutions providing gender-affirming care in four states, including Minnesota. The ruling was the outcome of a lawsuit filed by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, along with the attorneys general of Washington and Oregon.
The executive order signed by President Trump directed federally run insurance programs to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care, including Medicaid and TRICARE for military families. Judge Lauren King of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington issued the restraining order, stating that the order discriminated against transgender youth.
Ellison responded, saying he will not allow Trump to target vulnerable young people seeking to live their lives. The temporary restraining order will be in effect for 14 days, with a hearing scheduled for February 28 to argue for a preliminary injunction. This ruling follows another federal judge’s decision to temporarily block the executive order after a lawsuit from families with transgender or nonbinary children.
