Five people have been arrested in New York in connection with the disappearance and death of a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota. Sam Nordquist was reported missing by his family, leading to a missing persons investigation by the New York State Police. Human remains believed to be Nordquist’s were found in Yates County, NY, and the case is being investigated as a homicide.
Investigators revealed that Nordquist had been a victim of prolonged physical and psychological abuse, and the possibility of a hate crime has not been ruled out. The suspects, Precious Arzuaga, Jennifer A. Quijano, Kyle Sage, Patrick A. Goodwin, and Emily Motyka, have all been charged with second-degree murder with depraved indifference.
Authorities found that Nordquist had been staying with one of the suspects at Patty’s Lodge in Hopewell, NY, and had suffered ongoing physical abuse for several months. The suspects are being held without bail, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled.
The investigation is still ongoing, with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Nordquist’s death. The case has been described as “beyond depraved” by officials, with support and condolences extended to Nordquist’s family by Rochester city council members.
The community has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of transgender individuals, condemning the horrific crime that led to Nordquist’s death. The investigation continues to uncover more details about the abuse and the events that led to this tragic outcome.
