Clara Van Wieren’s three goals propel No. 6 UMD to 8-2 victory against Minnesota State


The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team dominated in a series-opening home victory against the University of Minnesota State Mankato, scoring eight goals. Captain Clara Van Wieren had a five-point night with her first hat trick of the season and two assists, while Olivia Wallin also had a strong performance with two goals and four assists for a total of six points. Freshman Caitlin Kraemer, named the WCHA player of the week, scored twice in the win. The Bulldogs led 3-1 after the first period and 6-2 going into the third, outshooting the Mavericks 29-25 and going four for five on the power play. Sophomore goaltender Ève Gascon made 23 saves in her return to the cage. The two teams will conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena, with the game broadcast on the MY9 Sports Network.
