New legislation proposes that sheriffs take command of Minnesota conservation officers

Senator Steve Green of Fosston, Minnesota, recently introduced a bill that would transfer the supervision of the state’s conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to local sheriff’s offices. The proposal would give sheriff’s offices control over conservation officer shifts, hours, and days off. Green claims that this change is necessary because the DNR lacks control over its officers and that conservation officers sometimes overstep their bounds.

The bill aims to provide more localized oversight of conservation officers by elected officials. Green consulted with a sheriff in his district before introducing the bill and hopes to get a hearing on it soon.

Northern News Now reached out to the DNR and a Northeast Minnesota sheriff for their reactions to the proposal. The news outlet is currently waiting for their responses. For more updates on this issue and others, stay tuned to Northern News Now.
