Minnesota considering replacing some ‘no trespassing’ signs with purple paint

A new proposal at the Minnesota Capitol may soon allow landowners to mark their property with purple paint instead of traditional signs to ward off trespassers. Sen. Nathan Wesenberg introduced the bill, citing the need for a more durable and cost-effective solution compared to signs, which can be damaged by vandals or weather.

The use of purple paint for marking land boundaries is already a law in 22 states, including neighboring states like Iowa and Illinois. Violators of trespass laws in Minnesota can face fines up to $3,000 and license revocation. The Department of Natural Resources expressed support for the bill, while also recommending additional regulations for visibility and tree marking distances.

The bill aims to make it easier for landowners to protect their property and for the public to know where trespassing is not allowed. Suggestions for using environmentally friendly paint and incorporating further regulations may be added to the bill before it becomes a law. The move is part of ongoing efforts by the state to support local news and address pressing issues related to land ownership and enforcement.
