While on his way to the library, Minnesota author Allen Eskens conceived the idea for ‘The Quiet Librarian’.

Cleveland, Minnesota-based author Allen Eskens was inspired to write his new book, “The Quiet Librarian,” while driving to a library in southeast Minnesota. The novel’s protagonist is a middle-aged librarian named Hana Babić, who has a hidden past shaped by the violent Bosnian war in the 1990s. To accurately represent Hana’s backstory, Eskens conducted research and sought the guidance of experts like University of Minnesota professor Erma Nezirević and Minneapolis Bosnian community member Elvir Mujić.

The story follows Hana as she becomes entangled in a dangerous mystery involving the death of a friend and the protection of her friend’s young son, all while being pursued by dangerous men with ties to the civil war. Throughout the writing process, Eskens focused on balancing Hana’s complex background with maintaining a brisk pace in the novel, editing out extraneous details that detracted from the story’s momentum.

“The Quiet Librarian,” published by Mulholland Books, delves into themes of loss, survival, and resilience, offering readers a gripping and emotional narrative.
