Two American tourists attacked by shark moments after entering waters of the Bahamas

Two young American tourists, Rileigh Decker and Summer Layman, had their dream vacation in the Bahamas turned into a nightmare when they were attacked by a shark while swimming in Bimini Bay. They were swimming hand-in-hand in the sparkling blue water off a friend’s yacht when Decker felt a nudge on her leg and then her leg was tugged down by the shark. Their group quickly pulled them out of the water and provided first aid before Decker was airlifted to a hospital in the Bahamas for further treatment.

The Bahamas has one of the highest shark incident rates in the world, with 34 confirmed unprovoked attacks. Despite their ordeal, Decker and Layman are grateful to be alive and are now back in Florida, sharing their harrowing experience. Decker is awaiting her third surgery in Orlando after undergoing two surgeries to clean out the wound. Both women are hoping to make a full recovery but have vowed never to enter the ocean again, with Decker saying she won’t even put her toes in the water. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by sharks in the ocean and the importance of taking precautions when swimming in areas known for shark attacks.
