Lighthouse Guild, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting visually impaired individuals, received a $100,000 grant from the Frances G. Scaife Foundation to expand its technological training programs. The foundation, a longtime supporter of Lighthouse Guild, donated the funds to help launch the Frannie Scaife Tech Training Initiative. This initiative will provide one-on-one and group training sessions to help visually impaired individuals develop essential technological skills for independence, work, and education.
One of the programs that will benefit from the grant is Tech Pals, where young visually impaired individuals teach older visually impaired individuals how to use modern smartphone technology. Another program, Tech-In, offers sessions on the latest technology advancements, such as Meta’s new Ray-Ban glasses. Lighthouse Guild also offers volunteering opportunities, including tax preparation assistance for visually impaired individuals and participation in events like the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, where sighted and visually impaired participants ride tandem bikes.
The organization’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jaine Schmidt, emphasized the importance of collaboration and sharing knowledge to expand training and accessibility not only in New York City but also throughout the country. By providing innovative programs and support, Lighthouse Guild aims to improve the quality of life for visually impaired individuals and create a more inclusive society. Through the generous grant from the Frances G. Scaife Foundation, Lighthouse Guild is able to continue its mission of empowering visually impaired individuals through technology training and education.
