Is adding girls high school flag football to Minnesota’s sports programs a good idea?

The NFL’s recent ‘flag football’ Super Bowl ad featuring a girl trying to join a high school football team is part of a campaign to make girls flag football a varsity sport across all 50 states. Currently, 14 states have officially sanctioned girls flag football as a varsity sport. In 2023, around 500,000 girls aged 6-17 played flag football, and women’s flag football will debut as an Olympic sport in 2028. While Minnesota has flag football programs open to girls, it is not officially sanctioned by the Minnesota High School League. The NFL suggests approaching school officials and the Community Relations Director of local NFL teams to start a program. The NFL also states that nearly 60 colleges and universities across the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA will offer women’s flag football this spring. Flag football is seen as the most inclusive and affordable way to play football, providing an opportunity for more girls to participate in sports. Data shows that adding a flag football team can increase overall sports participation, with approximately 50% of girls who join a flag football team playing a high school sport for the first time. The NFL’s efforts to promote girls flag football aim to empower girls and promote gender equality in sports, providing opportunities for girls to develop confidence and athletic skills.
