Minnesota House Democrats outspent House Republicans threefold in 2024, but still lost their majority in the latest election. Despite raising $9.8 million in donations and spending over $10 million to defend their control, they experienced a setback. The Democrats’ trifecta was ended when they lost three key swing districts, resulting in a 67-67 tie in the House and losing their grip over state government.
Currently, House Democrats are embroiled in a battle for control of the lower chamber that has reached the Minnesota Supreme Court. They are hoping for a favorable outcome in a March special election to regain a tie in the House. Until then, House Democrats continue to boycott the Capitol to prevent Republicans from gaining a quorum and taking control.
On the other hand, House Republicans, despite raising $3.2 million and spending nearly $4 million, succeeded in flipping key swing seats in their favor. The DFL state party committee raised nearly $11 million and ended the year with $2.3 million in cash on hand after spending $9 million in defense of their trifecta.
The state elections saw over $25 million in outside spending, with the DFL House Caucus being the biggest spender at nearly $6 million. Republican success was attributed to a “geographic realignment,” as rural areas lean more red while suburbs shift toward blue. Gov. Tim Walz remains a strong candidate for a third term with $1.05 million cash on hand.
