Risk of liver cancer and lifestyle habit changes following successful hepatitis C virus treatment with direct-acting antivirals: A study on lifestyle changes and liver cancer risk | BMC Gastroenterology

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently released a Global Progress Report detailing the advancements made in increasing access to Hepatitis C diagnostics and treatment in low- and middle-income countries. The report highlights the importance of overcoming barriers to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their economic status, have access to life-saving treatments for Hepatitis C.

Studies conducted by experts in the field of Hepatitis C have shown that eradicating the Hepatitis C virus infection can reduce the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma, a form of liver cancer. Patients with advanced liver disease who achieve sustained virologic response after treatment for Hepatitis C have shown similar survival rates to the general population. However, there is a persistent increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma for up to 10 years post-eradication in patients with cirrhosis or high FIB-4 scores.

Additionally, research has shown that the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma in Hepatitis C patients treated with direct-acting antiviral agents is significantly reduced. Furthermore, long-term risks of liver cancer in patients with advanced cirrhosis after Hepatitis C cure have been investigated, with promising results.

These findings underscore the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment of Hepatitis C to prevent the development of advanced liver disease and liver cancer. Efforts to increase access to diagnostics and treatment for Hepatitis C in low- and middle-income countries are crucial in reducing the global burden of liver disease and improving overall public health outcomes.
