Several government web pages went dark briefly on Friday after federal agencies were instructed to comply with a White House order to remove language related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. President Donald Trump signed an executive order recognizing only male and female genders, leading to the removal of references to “gender ideology” from federal government webpages. Some agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, complied with the order by taking their websites offline temporarily.
The Trump administration has also removed numerous pages from federal health agencies, including those related to HIV data, racial disparities, transgender individuals, and other public health resources. The U.S. Agency for International Development also had several web pages removed. Additionally, orders have been issued to eliminate support for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the military and civilian agencies, including the disbandment of resource groups and the celebration of cultural awareness.
The Health and Human Services website containing information on reproductive care, including abortion, was among the pages removed. The CDC began removing content related to gender identity, with pages on contraception and emergency contraception missing on Friday. While information on contraception and the abortion pill can still be found on detailed searches, the main landing pages have been made blank.
The email from the acting director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management instructed employees to recognize only two sexes, male and female, and not promote “gender ideology.” This action has raised concerns about the suppression of information on important public health topics and the restriction of access to vital resources.
