Doshia Woods: The Champion of Denver Women’s Basketball

Denver Women’s Basketball Coach Doshia Woods is making a name for herself not just on the court, but also off the court. In her fifth season as head coach, Woods is focused on developing strong and confident young women who can make a positive impact in their communities. She credits the game of basketball with saving her life and has a deep passion for coaching.

Woods, along with Omaha’s Carrie Banks, was hired as a head coach in 2020, making them co-deans of the Summit League Black coaches. She draws inspiration from Marion Washington, a pioneering Black woman coach she watched growing up in Kansas. Woods has had success on the court, including six straight 20+ win seasons and multiple postseason berths, but she emphasizes that success should not be measured solely by wins and losses.

Off the court, Woods prioritizes her players’ personal growth and development. She values the day-to-day process of coaching and enjoys watching her players grow both as athletes and individuals. Denver’s inclusive environment was an important factor in her decision to coach there, as she has been openly out since day one and values a supportive community.

Woods, who received a piece of the net from South Carolina Head Coach Dawn Staley after getting the Denver job, sees herself as a champion every time she steps on the court. She believes that the game of basketball is about more than just scoring points – it’s about helping players achieve their dreams and making a positive impact both on and off the court.
