Minnesota’s Martin competes for DNC chair position.

After 14 years as the Minnesota DFL Party chair, Ken Martin’s tenure could come to an end if he is able to convince national Democrats that his track record of success can lead to a broader party rebound. Martin, one of eight candidates in the race for DNC chair, pointed to his 25-0 record in elections in Minnesota as proof of his abilities. The election for DNC chair will culminate in a vote on Saturday just outside Washington, D.C.

Martin has emphasized his fundraising success and collaboration with state party leaders as reasons he should be chosen to lead the party. Some of his rivals, like Ben Wikler, have argued that while Martin’s success in Minnesota is impressive, the national Democratic Party needs someone who has experience in battleground states.

Amidst discussion of what went wrong in the 2024 election, Martin and others have emphasized the need to build the party’s presence across the country and tailor their message to working class Americans through different mediums. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has thrown his support behind Martin, citing his success in running a state party and navigating conflicts. The winner of the DNC chair race will be tasked with leading the party forward after a challenging election cycle.
