OpenAI has announced a partnership with the U.S. National Laboratories to provide its latest artificial intelligence models for scientific research and nuclear weapons security. Up to 15,000 scientists at the National Laboratories will have access to OpenAI’s reasoning-focused o1 series, and one of its models will be deployed on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The partnership will focus on enhancing cybersecurity, disease treatment, fundamental mathematics, physics, and nuclear weapons security.
In addition to the partnership with the National Laboratories, OpenAI has also released ChatGPT Gov, an AI platform designed for U.S. government use. This platform allows government agencies to use OpenAI’s models while operating within their own secure hosting environments. The platform has already been used by over 90,000 government employees to translate documents, draft policy memos, generate code, and build applications.
The partnership with the government comes as OpenAI appears to be making efforts to appease President Donald Trump, with CEO Sam Altman contributing to the inauguration and expressing admiration for the president. OpenAI is also involved in the Stargate project, which includes significant investment into U.S. AI infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a Chinese AI startup lab called DeepSeek has seen success in the U.S., with its app reaching the top of Apple’s App Store rankings. Altman has acknowledged DeepSeek’s impressive R1 model and sees them as a new competitor in the AI space.
