Lindsay Haugen, a woman who strangled her boyfriend and was featured in Netflix’s “I Am A Killer” series for the 2015 crime, asked a Montana parole board for clemency. The confession included in the show, where Haugen said she killed her boyfriend out of love, was rescinded during the hearing. Haugen, serving a 60-year sentence since 2016, claimed she said the chilling confession to stop questioning. She expressed regret and remorse for the crime and asked for a shorter sentence, citing her treatment of alcohol addiction.
During the hearing, approval for clemency was opposed by the Billings Police Department detective who interrogated Haugen, as well as by Mast’s family members. They emphasized the heinous nature of the crime and argued that she should not be rewarded for exploiting her stepson’s murder on a popular television show.
The Montana Board of Pardons and Parole has 30 days to recommend to Governor Greg Gianforte, who has the authority to grant or deny Haugen’s request for clemency. Without it, she would be eligible for parole in September 2030. The board received both letters supporting and opposing her early release, with the decision on clemency being described as an extraordinary form of relief from a sentence. The Netflix episode did not influence the board’s review of her application, and it was determined that a public hearing was necessary to hear Haugen’s explanation.
