Environmental organizations file lawsuit against Minnesota agencies for nitrate pollution

Environmental groups in Minnesota, including the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, have filed a lawsuit against the state Pollution Control Agency and the Department of Agriculture. The lawsuit aims to compel the agencies to adopt regulations that effectively protect water resources from nitrate pollution caused by farm-related activities such as animal manure and commercial fertilizer.

The vulnerable karst geology in southeast Minnesota puts over 90,000 residents relying on private well water at risk of high nitrate levels, which can pose health risks, especially to infants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has urged Minnesota to take additional steps to address nitrate contamination.

While some progress has been made, environmental advocates are pushing for stronger regulations to safeguard drinking water and groundwater. Critics argue that the state’s response lacks urgency and sufficient funding. Balancing the need for clean water with supporting agriculture is a priority for both sides. The state agencies have defended their actions, emphasizing the inclusive process used in developing regulations to protect the environment while also supporting farmers.
