Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company, according to its parent company, UnitedHealth Group. The investigation into Thompson’s killing is ongoing, and Mangione, who was arrested in Pennsylvania, is facing charges of weapons possession and other offenses. He is currently fighting extradition to New York, where he will be charged with murder.
Mangione’s social media and writings indicate that he may have suffered a life-altering back injury, which could have been a motive for targeting UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health care organizations in America. Police found a gun, silencer, a handwritten document referencing the health care industry, and a notebook with notes about targeting a CEO in Mangione’s possession at the time of his arrest.
The gun used in the killing was a ghost gun made with a 3-D printer and linked to shell casings found at the crime scene. Security video shows that Thompson was walking on a sidewalk in Manhattan when he was shot from behind. Mangione, who arrived in the city on a bus and stayed at a hostel, is believed to have targeted Thompson specifically.
Mangione’s attorney has stated that he plans to plead not guilty to all charges. The next hearing in his Pennsylvania case is scheduled for December 30th, where he remains in custody while fighting extradition to New York. Once back in New York, he will be formally arrested and charged with murder.
