Plastics technology at LAPP: Bridging the Gap from Theory to Application – Mastering the Craft of Plastic Manufacturing

The Institute of Plastics Technology (IKT) is conducting groundbreaking research in various areas of plastics technology to improve efficiency and sustainability in production processes. One of their projects focuses on the mechanical recycling of bioplastic PHB by adding suitable additives in a twin-screw extruder. Another project is working on developing high-performance plastics for electromobility with improved resistance characteristics. The IKT is also researching new stabilisers and processing strategies to enhance the recyclability of plastics.

Research at the IKT also includes developing advanced measuring equipment and methods to describe and predict the behavior of machines and tools in manufacturing processes. The institute is working on mathematical models for processes that can accurately predict machine behaviors, as well as researching high-viscosity extrusion methods for cable production and modifications to achieve high viscosities in polymers.

Additionally, the IKT is conducting research on injection moulding processes for connector production, focusing on material efficiency and flow properties within the machines. The institute is also working on enhancing plastic products to fulfill multiple functions or perform under more demanding conditions, with a focus on predicting product behavior and lifespan under different operating conditions. This research includes testing the durability of cables in various environmental conditions.

The IKT’s research efforts aim to maximize the efficiency and sustainability of plastics technology, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future in the industry.
