3,700 return to Malibu after fire, fire official warns of significant recovery efforts ahead

Cooler weather in California helped firefighters make progress in containing the Franklin Fire in Malibu, allowing over 3,000 residents to return home. The fire has burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed some homes, but was 30% contained as of Thursday night. Actor Dick Van Dyke and musician Cher had to evacuate, while the fire came close to Pepperdine University. Around 1,600 residents remained under evacuation orders as some roads were reopened.

Six residential structures were destroyed and another damaged by the fire, with minor structures also affected. Over 1,700 firefighting personnel and 16 helicopters were assigned to the fire, dropping water and fire retardant over the area. Van Dyke, who was evacuated with the help of neighbors, described the fire approaching his property.

Newlyweds Michelle and Blake Geffen lost their rental home and belongings in the fire and had to evacuate with their cat and important documents. The fire also reached Pepperdine University, where students sheltered in place as flames came close to the campus.

The Franklin Fire occurred during red flag warnings due to strong winds and dry conditions, but the cooler weather allowed firefighters to gain ground. The newly formed Community Fire Brigade in Los Angeles County is helping with the firefighting efforts and advocating for better fire prevention in the community. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and although progress has been made, officials emphasize that there is still work to be done to ensure the safety of residents.
