Some parts of the U.S. could see the northern lights this Thanksgiving

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that minor to moderate geomagnetic storms caused by a recent solar storm could lead to the northern lights being visible in parts of the U.S. during Thanksgiving. States such as Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Idaho, Wyoming, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire have a chance of seeing the aurora borealis. The intensity and duration of the auroras will depend on the strength of the solar storms. Viewers can track the activity and forecast on NOAA’s Aurora Dashboard. While clear conditions are best for viewing, areas of cloudiness may limit visibility in the Northeast and near the Great Lakes. Unlike previous solar storms that caused disruptions, this event is not expected to impact communication systems. Solar storms occur when coronal mass ejections from the sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating radiant auroras at high latitudes. The sun is currently entering a period of increased activity, leading to more frequent sightings of the northern lights further south than usual.
