Memorial Blood Centers is facing a shortage of blood donations during the holiday season, putting Minnesota hospitals at risk of not having enough blood products for surgeries and emergencies. The nonprofit has issued an emergency plea for donors to step up and help fill the gap, offering holiday-themed T-shirts as an incentive.
Last year, MBC reported a 20% decline in donations during Thanksgiving week, as people were less likely to donate due to holiday travels and family gatherings. This year, the need for blood remains high, with hospitals like M Health Fairview performing over 40,000 transfusions of donor blood products in the first nine months of 2024.
The holiday season brings an increased risk of accidents, making the need for blood more urgent. Donors are encouraged to make appointments at collection centers or mobile blood drives, including upcoming events at Amy’s Cupcake Shoppe in Hopkins and Children’s Minnesota in Minneapolis. By donating blood, individuals can help save lives and ensure that hospitals have the necessary blood products to treat patients in need.
