Health officials confirm bird flu found in another batch of raw milk sold in California.

The California Department of Public Health has issued a warning against drinking a second lot of raw milk from Raw Farm LLC due to the presence of the bird flu virus. The affected lot has been voluntarily recalled, and consumers are advised to return any remaining product to the store of purchase. Raw milk is not pasteurized, which poses a risk of foodborne illness especially for vulnerable populations. Since October, there have been 29 cases of bird flu in the state, all linked to direct contact with infected dairy cows. However, there has been no person-to-person spread of the virus, and all reported cases have had mild symptoms. Raw Farm has stated that their cows are healthy and regularly tested for pathogens. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has placed a quarantine on dairy herds where bird flu has been detected, with farms being monitored for recovery and weekly testing. The nationwide outbreak of H5N1 bird flu began in poultry in 2022 and was first detected in U.S. dairy cattle in March 2024. The CDFA has reported cases of infected livestock herds in California and Utah, with ongoing efforts to contain the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of dairy products.
