Minnesota farmer delivers national Thanksgiving turkeys to Washington DC

Minnesota turkey grower John Zimmerman had a Thanksgiving like no other this year as he presented two of his turkeys, Peach and Blossom, to President Biden in Washington, DC. Zimmerman, who has been raising turkeys for over 20 years near Northfield, serves as the chairman of the National Turkey Federation and was tasked with raising the National Thanksgiving flock.

The presidential flock, which hatched in July, consisted of 44 birds that were carefully handled and exposed to various stimuli to prepare them for the White House environment. Peach and Blossom were chosen based on their appearance, demeanor, and friendliness, with President Biden selecting their names in honor of his home state of Delaware.

Zimmerman and his family had the opportunity to meet President Biden and witness the turkeys being officially pardoned. Peach and Blossom will now retire to Farmamerica, Minnesota’s Center for Agricultural Interpretation, where they will help educate visitors about the state’s status as the top turkey-producing state in the country.

The experience was described as unforgettable and President Biden was praised for his personable and friendly demeanor during the encounter.
