A federal judge has declined Rudy Giuliani’s request to postpone his court proceedings to hand over his assets to former Georgia election workers he defamed. The judge denied the delay so that Giuliani could attend Donald Trump’s inauguration as president. Giuliani’s lawyer argued that he has a right to be at Trump’s events, but the judge disagreed, stating that Giuliani’s “social calendar” was not a valid reason for a postponement. Giuliani claimed that his assets are tied up due to the defamation judgment against him and that he has been unable to pay his bills as a result. The dispute centers around Giuliani’s reluctance to surrender his property to the women who won the defamation case. He has turned over some belongings, but not everything required by the court, including the keys to his New York City apartment. The trial is set to take place four days before Trump’s inauguration and will determine whether Giuliani must surrender his condo in Palm Beach, Florida, and his four World Series rings. Giuliani is appealing both the asset turnover order and the defamation verdict. He has continued to make false accusations against the women, prompting them to seek further penalties. Giuliani criticized the judge as a “serious left-wing Democrat” appointed by Trump, but maintained that he does not regret defaming the women.
