Extremist wanted for U.S. bombings in the name of animal rights captured in Wales after over two decades on the lam

Daniel Andreas San Diego, an animal rights extremist suspected of carrying out bombings in Northern California over 20 years ago, has been captured in Wales. San Diego was arrested by North Wales Police, the National Crime Agency, and the U.K.’s Counter Terrorism Police. The FBI Director, Christopher Wray, praised San Diego’s arrest, stating that he will finally be held accountable for his alleged acts of violence and destruction.

San Diego is linked to two bombings that occurred in 2003 at biotech company Chiron Corp. in Emeryville and nutritional company Shaklee Corp. in Pleasanton. The FBI believes the bombings were in retaliation for the companies’ involvement in animal experiments. San Diego, who is a vegan and worked as a computer network specialist, had been evading authorities since the incidents.

No injuries were reported in the bombings, and both companies have stated their opposition to animal testing. Chiron Corp. was later acquired by Novartis AG, and Shaklee Corporation maintains a strict no-animal-testing policy.

Authorities emphasized that violence and destruction are not the appropriate ways to express one’s views. The capture of San Diego after more than two decades on the run sends a message that the FBI will pursue and hold accountable those responsible for criminal acts. The investigation into the bombings and San Diego’s motives is ongoing.
