After experiencing heartbreaking losses in consecutive section tournaments, the Becker football team entered this season with high expectations. While winning and losing were not the main focus for coach Dwight Lundeen, the seniors on the team were determined to not disappoint the legendary coach who had been with the program for 55 years. Lundeen holds a special place in Becker’s history as the architect and pioneer of the football program.
In the Class 4A championship game at U.S. Bank Stadium, Becker faced Totino-Grace and emerged victorious with a 24-8 win, securing their fourth state championship and first since 2015. The team’s seniors played a crucial role in setting the tone for the game, with key plays from players like running back Landon Kujawa and receiver Carter Reckelberg.
Kujawa’s 32-yard touchdown run and Reckelberg’s 54-yard end-around for a score helped Becker take a commanding 14-0 lead going into halftime. The Bulldogs displayed speed and athleticism throughout the game, shutting down Totino-Grace and maintaining their lead to clinch the state title.
Following the game, Lundeen expressed his pride in the team’s dedication and commitment to returning to the championship game and securing the victory. The senior players, who refused to let Lundeen down, realized their goal of winning a state championship, bringing joy and satisfaction to their legendary coach and the entire Becker community.
