A digital rights activist, who is transgender, confronted Rep. Nancy Mace at a public event after Mace introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol. The activist, Evan Greer, displayed an LGBTQ pride flag and called out Mace for spreading hate and lies that have led to the deaths of trans people. Mace responded by misgendering Greer and making inappropriate comments about her genitals. Videos of the incident went viral, with conservative influencers and Mace continuing to insult Greer.
Greer criticized Project Liberty, the organization that hosted the event, for not addressing Mace’s remarks. She highlighted the importance of standing up against those who oppose human rights and called for a collective resistance strategy within the tech policy space.
Mace, who initially claimed to be pro-LGBTQ rights, has recently led an anti-transgender campaign against the only trans member of Congress, Sarah McBride. McBride, who has been repeatedly misgendered by Mace, stated that she would comply with new bathroom rules despite her disagreement with them. In response, McBride will have a private bathroom in her congressional office, while all other public bathrooms in the Capitol will be off-limits to transgender individuals.
The incident has sparked a debate about the role of technology in human rights violations and the need for a unified resistance strategy in the face of discriminatory actions by lawmakers.
