A Boston man named Gregory Burnett has been charged with assault for allegedly attacking a transgender woman on a train last month. The victim reported being punched and kicked while Burnett screamed derogatory terms at her. The woman tried to defend herself but was ultimately injured when Burnett pulled on her leg, causing her to fall and fracture her wrist. She believes the attack was motivated by her gender identity. District Attorney Kevin Hayden condemned the attack, stating that everyone has the right to travel on public transportation safely. Other passengers intervened to help the victim during the assault, and police were able to identify and arrest Burnett based on witness descriptions and surveillance video. Burnett has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and civil rights violation with injury. It is unclear if he has an attorney. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of violence against individuals based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
