Christine Swedell opened up in a recent interview with Dateline about the traumatic 36 years since her older sister, Sue Swedell, disappeared in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. Sue vanished on her way home from work at the age of 19 in 1988. Christine described Sue as her very best friend, and despite a three-year age gap, they were inseparable. Sue was a bright student who loved school and church and worked two jobs before her disappearance.
The night Sue vanished, a blizzard hit Lake Elmo and she was last seen leaving her car at a gas station after speaking to a man. Christine believes Sue may have accepted a ride from a stranger due to the bad weather and car troubles. Despite numerous leads and tips over the years, there has been no concrete evidence to suggest what happened to Sue. The case remains open and actively investigated by authorities.
Christine has put her life on hold in hopes of one day finding closure and reuniting with her sister, whom she believed would never run away due to their strong family bond. She is currently studying Global Studies at the University of Minnesota, something Sue would have loved. The Swedell family continues to hold on to Sue’s belongings and memories while sharing updates on social media and offering a reward for information leading to Sue’s whereabouts. A new age progression photo has been released in hopes of sparking new leads in the case as Sue would have turned 56 years old in February. If anyone has information about Sue Swedell’s disappearance, they are encouraged to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office or the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
