In a new ad from the progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good, George Clooney reminds male voters that their vote is private and they can choose to support Harris/Walz without their Republican friends knowing. The ad shows a man in a polling place with his daughter, choosing to vote for Harris instead of his usual Republican choice. Clooney’s voiceover emphasizes that “what happens in the booth stays in the booth.” A similar ad narrated by Julia Roberts focuses on women’s right to choose in the voting booth, with a female voter confidently choosing Harris despite pressure from her husband.
The executive director of Vote Common Good, Doug Pagitt, explains that the goal of the ads is to empower voters to break with Republican friends and family members and make their own choices at the ballot box. The group was established in 2018 as a progressive alternative for evangelical Christians who voted for Trump in large numbers in 2016 and 2020. They aim to remind voters of their individual power and the importance of standing up for their beliefs, even if it means going against the expectations of their political circles.
