In a thrilling match on Tuesday, Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United played to a 0-0 draw in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, with RSL eventually falling 4-5 in a penalty shootout. Despite the loss, RSL goalkeeper Zac MacMath put on an impressive performance, making seven saves and earning his seventh clean sheet of the year. Real Salt Lake extended their unbeaten streak to seven games and now head to Minnesota for a decisive Leg Two on Nov. 2.
Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s squad came off a record-setting regular season with high hopes. In the first leg of their playoff matchup, RSL dominated possession but struggled to break through Minnesota’s defensive setup. Both teams had their chances, with MacMath making critical saves to keep his team in the game.
The match went to a penalty shootout, where Real Salt Lake briefly held an advantage after a save by MacMath. However, a missed penalty kick by Justen Glad and a deflected shot by Braian Ojeda sealed RSL’s fate.
Real Salt Lake now faces a must-win situation in Game Two on Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota. The team will need a victory to force a third match back in Utah. Despite the disappointing result, RSL remains confident in their ability to advance in the playoffs.
