Gas Tax Increase Proposed by Minnesota Representative Threatens to Impact Low-Income Residents Significantly

Republican lawmaker Rep. Greg Davids criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for implementing what he called “bad” and “lazy” tax policy, specifically regarding the state’s excise tax on gasoline. Davids argued that tying the gas tax to an index unfairly impacts lower-income residents who must pay more each year. He described the method as a “lazy man’s tax increase” that avoids the need for legislative approval for future tax hikes.

In 2019, Walz proposed a 70% increase in the state’s gas tax, which was supported by the Democrat-controlled House but stalled in the Senate. Davids questioned how Walz and the Democrats managed a nearly $18 billion budget surplus but are projected to face a $1.5 billion deficit by 2026.

Under Walz, Minnesota also saw tax cuts for the middle class, such as an increased child tax credit and a reduced Social Security tax rate. However, Davids criticized other measures including increased taxes on corporations and a new “surtax” on long-term investment income.

The Tax Foundation noted that Walz’s tax policy differs from other potential Democratic running mates, making him an “outlier.” The foundation highlighted the importance of examining Walz’s record as governor to predict his potential federal tax policy if chosen as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.

Fox News reached out to Walz’s office and the Harris-Walz campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
