Trump and his supporters maintain that he is not a Nazi

Some Democrats have compared former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden to a 1939 pro-Nazi event, leading Trump and his allies to insist he is “not Hitler.” Former first lady Melania Trump rejected the comparison in a Fox News interview, while Trump falsely claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris had called him Hitler or a Nazi. Harris and her campaign have not used that language but have criticized Trump’s policies and rhetoric as dangerous. Trump and his supporters have labeled Harris’ criticisms as desperate and false. Trump has also called Harris a fascist multiple times and compared her administration to a Gestapo regime.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal have also drawn comparisons between Trump’s rally and the Nazi event at Madison Square Garden. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggested that likening Trump to Hitler could make him a target for assassination. Harris condemned Trump for his alleged positive remarks about Hitler, with former White House chief of staff John Kelly claiming Trump praised Hitler’s actions. The Atlantic reported that Trump said he needed generals like Hitler.

At the rally, the Democratic National Committee projected “Trump praised Hitler” onto Madison Square Garden, which was denied by Trump and his campaign. CBS News referenced a statement from Trump’s vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, who once compared Trump to America’s Hitler. Vance argued that he has been open about disagreeing with Trump in the past.
