A man shot by St. Paul police on Monday night is in critical condition as the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates the incident. The man, who was armed with a handgun, pointed the gun at his head when officers approached him near Snelling and Charles avenues. Despite officers’ attempts to negotiate with him, the man refused to drop the gun and began walking south on Snelling Avenue towards the busy intersection of Snelling and University avenues.
Police used less lethal rounds in an effort to disarm the man, but were unsuccessful. When the man pointed the gun at officers, they fired their weapons, critically injuring him. Body cameras captured the incident.
The man received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to Regions Hospital where he remains hospitalized. No officers were injured during the encounter, and the intersection of Snelling and University avenues has since reopened.
The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave as the investigation continues. The incident caused temporary closures and disruptions in the area, but normal light-rail service has resumed. St. Paul Police Sergeant Mike Ernster provided updates on the situation and assured the public that the officers followed protocol during the incident.
