House DFL Legislators Encourage Minnesota Seniors to Shop Wisely and Call on Congress to Address Medicare Advantage

A group of House DFL Legislators in Minnesota have expressed concern over reports that patients enrolled in for-profit Medicare Advantage insurance plans may lose access to their preferred health care providers. Major health systems like HealthPartners and Essentia Health have announced they will be dropping out of Medicare Advantage networks offered by Humana and UnitedHealthcare due to high levels of claim denials and slow processing times. This could result in network disruptions or higher out-of-pocket costs for thousands of Minnesotans in 2025.

While the state legislature does not have authority over contract negotiations between health systems and insurers, the House DFL has been working to maintain and improve access to quality health care and protect publicly funded health programs from private profit-making entities. In 2024, legislation was passed to reform prior authorization practices, provide oversight of corporate mergers, and better understand financial transactions in the health care system.

The House DFL Legislators are calling on Congress to ensure the Medicare Advantage program is living up to its name and providing affordable health care for all. During the Medicare enrollment period, they urge Minnesotans to carefully examine their choices and seek help through resources like Medicare.Gov or the state’s Senior LinkAge Line. The group is committed to finding solutions that will ensure affordable health care for all Minnesotans, regardless of their circumstances.
