Controversial Issues: Abortion, Marijuana, Immigration, and Beyond

Voters across the country will decide on almost 150 ballot measures in the upcoming election, covering a wide range of policy issues. The most attention-grabbing topics include constitutional amendments related to abortion rights, with a focus on reproductive freedom, democracy, and economic justice. The Ballot Initiative Strategy Center has identified 147 ballot measures in 41 states, addressing abortion, voting and elections, marijuana legalization, and immigration.

Abortion-related measures will be on ballots in 10 states, with some states seeking to expand abortion access, while others aim to enshrine existing rights. Voting and elections-related measures will cover topics such as ID requirements, voting restrictions, and citizen-led initiatives. Nearly half of the states with marijuana legalization will vote on further measures to legalize recreational or medical marijuana. Arizona is the only state with an immigration-related measure on the ballot, aiming to give state law enforcement the power to deport undocumented immigrants.

Economic issues and crime-related measures will also be on the ballot in several states, with proposals to gradually raise the minimum wage, cap property tax revenues, and raise criminal penalties for drug-related crimes. Overall, voters will have the opportunity to shape the future of their states on a variety of important issues through these ballot measures in the upcoming election.
