The Minneapolis Police Department’s SWAT team responded to an attempted arrest of John Sawchak, who was charged with second-degree attempted murder in the shooting of his neighbor, Davis Moturi. Moturi was gravely injured after being shot in the neck while pruning a tree near the property line. His wife, Caroline Moturi, detailed in an online fundraiser how the harassment from Sawchak began when they moved into their home in September 2023, and despite multiple calls to the police for help, they were told nothing could be done.
Caroline Moturi expressed frustration with the lack of assistance from the police, stating that an officer even suggested they should just move out. She described the shooting incident as a living nightmare that left her husband with a concussion, blood in his lungs, a fractured spine, and two broken ribs. Thankfully, he has since been released from the hospital.
The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of the police response to ongoing conflicts and harassment in the community, with Caroline Moturi insinuating that the MPD and Mayor Jacob Frey bear some responsibility for the attack on her husband. The case highlights the challenges that individuals with mental illness pose to law enforcement and the necessity of providing better support and resources for those struggling with mental health issues.
