As Election Day nears, both the Trump and Harris campaigns are focusing on courting Black men, a crucial voting bloc in a tight presidential race. NBC News interviewed seven Black men about their voting plans and concerns. While a majority plan to support Harris, some had initial reservations but were inspired by her ties to influential women. A key factor is the gap in support for candidates among Black men of different age groups.
A poll found that 81% of Black men overall support Harris, with lower support among younger men under 50. Trump is most popular with Black men over 50, although overall support has decreased compared to previous elections. There is concern about a historic gender gap, as Trump performs better with men of all races, putting Democrats on alert.
Efforts to reach Black men voters differ between the campaigns. Harris has been actively engaging with the community through policy proposals and media appearances. On the other hand, Trump’s outreach to Black men has lessened. Black men interviewed expressed varying opinions on the candidates. Some support Harris for her qualifications and potential to break barriers, while others are wary of her record as a prosecutor.
Ultimately, the Black men interviewed emphasized the importance of considering candidates’ policies and abilities, rather than voting out of fear or opposition to the other candidate. Harris resonates with many due to her understanding of challenges faced by Black communities. The interviewees stressed the need for candidates to address issues like education and economic empowerment to truly benefit the Black community.
