Former President Barack Obama contrasted former President Donald Trump’s character to that of the late Sen. John McCain during a rally at the University of Arizona. Obama praised McCain for his values, ability to engage in honest argument, and refusal to demonize political opponents. He highlighted McCain’s defense of Obama during the 2008 election and criticized Trump for disregarding values that McCain stood for, such as lying, cheating, and disrespecting the Constitution. McCain, a war hero who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, had earned the respect of Obama and many others for his service and integrity. Trump had made disparaging remarks about McCain, calling him a “loser” and questioning his heroism. In the aftermath of Trump’s comments, a new voting bloc known as “McCain Republicans” emerged in Arizona. Vice President Kamala Harris also praised McCain for his decisive vote to save the Affordable Care Act, which McCain’s refusal to repeal during Trump’s presidency. Obama and Harris both acknowledged McCain’s legacy and the importance of upholding the values he represented. The rally attendees showed their support with applause and cheers for McCain’s actions and the preservation of the Affordable Care Act.
