China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island, following criticism of a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. Lai had stated that China had no right to represent Taiwan and its people, but was willing to work together on global challenges. China views Lai as a separatist and troublemaker, previously conducting “punishment” drills after his inauguration. The latest exercises, called “Joint Sword-2024B,” involve the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force testing joint operations capability. The drills, occurring around the north, south, and east of Taiwan, are meant as a warning against separatist acts.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense and Mainland Affairs Council criticized the exercises as irrational and provocative, stating that Taiwan’s existence is an undeniable fact and that President Lai expressed goodwill in his address. China has increased military activities around Taiwan in recent years, with Lai emphasizing that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other. Chinese officials believe that Lai is advancing Taiwan independence for his own political interests, while most people in Taiwan believe that a Chinese invasion is unlikely in the next five years.
The drills serve as a reminder of China’s determination to achieve unification and its view of Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory. Taipei remains vigilant in protecting its sovereignty and democracy, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and dialogue between the two sides.
