A man was fatally shot and nine other people were wounded, including three children, after two groups fired at each other following a Tennessee State University homecoming parade in Nashville. The shooting occurred on Jefferson Street after the parade had ended but the parking lots were still full. Police believe there were shooters on both sides of the street and are investigating the incident. Some of the victims had critical injuries, while the children who were shot had non-life-threatening injuries. Police found handguns at the scene and believe at least one person who is in the hospital fired shots.
The shooting was unexpected given the number of police officers present at the event. In a separate incident, three people were trampled at Nissan Stadium during the school’s homecoming football game due to an argument that escalated into a fight. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as they tried to flee the gunfire, with some mistaking the sounds for fireworks.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell condemned the violence, stating that what was a joyous celebration turned tragic due to a senseless act of violence. Tennessee State University officials also expressed sadness over the incident. Witnesses, including a recent high school graduate, expressed their shock and sadness, noting the impact on the community and the sense of fear that now exists in public spaces.
