Trump campaign asks for increased military assistance to protect former president

The Trump campaign has requested additional security measures similar to those provided to a sitting president due to increased threats against former President Donald Trump’s life. These measures include military assets such as armored cars, protection while flying, temporary airspace restrictions, and special operations forces. The campaign argues that threats to Trump’s safety have limited his ability to campaign. Trump has faced two alleged assassination attempts recently and has been briefed on threats from Iran. The campaign is using additional tactics and evasive maneuvers to be less predictable in movements. The Secret Service has made enhancements to its communications capabilities, resources, and protective operations since the attempted assassination of Trump. The Department of Defense regularly provides aid for Trump’s protection as well. The Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned that providing more assets would violate federal law restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates in locations across the nation, overseen by U.S. Northern Command, which includes explosives experts, technicians, and capabilities to detect and protect against various threats. Overall, Trump is receiving the same level of protection as President Biden, so the campaign should not expect more.
