Vice President Kamala Harris’ team is discussing ways to differentiate her from President Joe Biden in order to improve her image and chances in the 2024 race. Polling has shown that voters are looking for a new direction and Harris wants to distance herself from Biden without being overly critical of his presidency. She has proposed new policy ideas, such as a “Medicare at home” program, and is releasing her medical records to show her youth compared to both Biden and Trump. Harris is seeking to establish herself as a candidate with a new way forward, while still respecting Biden’s leadership and record.
Harris has come under fire for her responses to questions about Biden, including saying she couldn’t think of anything she would do differently than him. Former President Donald Trump has used this as ammunition against her, calling her “grossly incompetent.” Harris has since mentioned potential differences, such as appointing a Republican to her Cabinet and establishing a bipartisan council of policy advisers.
While Biden was stung by Harris’ comments, he has acknowledged that she may need to draw more contrasts with him in the future. Overall, there is no “huge concern” within the White House about Harris distancing herself from Biden, as long as it helps her win the election. Harris has indicated that she is not Joe Biden or Donald Trump, and is focused on her own vision for a potential administration.
