Hurricane Milton caused severe damage to the Tampa Bay Rays’ home ballpark, Tropicana Field. The powerful winds tore off a large portion of the stadium’s roof, exposing the playing field and stands. Nearby, a construction crane was also toppled by the high winds. Thankfully, there were no immediate reports of injuries. The Florida Division of Emergency Management had set up a base camp at Tropicana Field, but workers and equipment were removed as winds exceeded the roof’s design limits.
Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed that no state assets were in the stadium at the time of the damage. The Rays, who finished the season below .500, are focusing on community support and staff safety rather than assessing the full extent of the damage. The team expressed gratitude that no one was injured in the incident. They are working with law enforcement to secure the building and evaluate the overall condition of Tropicana Field in the coming days and weeks.
The Rays are scheduled to open the 2025 season at home against the Colorado Rockies on March 27. Despite the setback, the team remains committed to supporting their community and staff members.
